New England ski areas put opening day on hold
November 21st, 2009
As reported by the Boston Globe , three Vermont ski areas are postponing opening day. Stowe, Okemo and Sugarbush had hoped to open next week. Early November temperatures got snowmaking off with a bang but with the continued mild temperatures have put a hold on any substantial snow making. The Sugarbush website had this to say.
It looks like 50-degree temps and sunny days will continue to wash New England in its summer-like glow for at least another five to six days. Sooooooo….. you guessed it…..we will not be open for Thanksgiving.
Okemo simply said that they we’re “postponing” opening day with no insight of when they may open. Stowe is still holding out hope that nightly temperatures will dip so they can fire up the guns and open for the Thanksgiving weekend.
Lake Winnipesaukee vacation in Meredith
October 15th, 2009
Our family rented a house on Lake Winnipesaukee this past August. We were in Meredith which is the western corner of the lake. Meredith has a nice downtown with a plenty of shopping to stroll along and restaurants to eat at. Whether it’s was art, clothing, antiques or Meredith had a lot to offer.
The house we stayed at was about 15 minutes from town, down a dirt road and right on the water. The lake was crystal clear and there were plenty on coves, which our house was in one, so you did feel secluded. We spent our days swimming of our dock or fishing in the Read the rest of this entry »
Haystack Ski Club
October 9th, 2009
Deerfield Valley News: 08-09-2009
WILMINGTON- In a development sure to please some Wilmington residents, the owners of Haystack Club have announced that they intend to open Haystack ski area this season.
Haystack Club’s Bob Rubin said crews from Poma, the ski lift manufacturer, have been working on the Hayfever lift, refurbishing it in preparation for the approaching ski season. “There will be skiing this year,” Rubin said. “We want to get people back on the mountain.”
The lift will be load-tested within the next few weeks. The load test simulates operation of the lift with a full complement of passengers. Barrels filled with water are used to simulate riders and the lift is operated for several days with observers from the Vermont Department of Labor Passenger Tramway Division, the lift manufacturer, and the insurance carrier. Breast Cancer Awareness Month
October 4th, 2009
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Check out “laughter is the breast medicine” a book by a friend of mine that she has recently completed. It’s a hoot! National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease, promote early detection and raise funds for research prevention and a cure.
The campaign also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer. As well as providing a platform for breast cancer charities to raise awareness of their work and of the disease, BCAM is also a prime opportunity to remind women to be breast aware for earlier detection. Each year over 175,000 women (and 2000 men!) are diagnosed with breast cancer. Approximately 1 in 9 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Aside from skin cancer, it is the most common cancer in women.
Buying a vacation home

Can We Afford A Vacation Home If We Rent It Out?
If you bought a vacation home, how much of its total expense could you offset by renting it out? Could you count on an extra $5,000 per year, which would make it easily affordable for you? Possibly. Could it actually pay for itself and turn a small profit? Probably not, unless you plan to aggressively work the rental market and only use it yourself in April and November. But if a day at the beach in April doesn’t sound like much of a vacation, you can still offset a significant portion – possibly anywhere from 25% to 75% – of your vacation home’s total expenses while still enjoying its frequent use. Cannon Mittersill merger
September 26th, 2009
Well, it’s not exactly new news since it is about six months old but finally after years of rumors and debate the Mittersill ski area will now be part of Cannon Mountain. This really adds some uniqueness to an already historical mountain. Depending on what future plans go forth this can be some great “accessible back country skiing”. Many who know Cannon Mountain have long accessed the Mittersill trails for a bit of back country skiing but this ski season it will be completely in bounds and legal. My personal opinion would be to keep it as natural as possible on the Mittersill side much like Mad River glen in Vermont. Cannon Mountain had this to say about the future of the trails of Mittersill. Read the rest of this entry »
New England Ski Deals 2009/10
September 24th, 2009
I’ve been searching the web for Ski pass deals for New england resorts and am a little surprised that I haven’t found any obvious bargains out there. One reason that I have read is that, despite the recession, ticket sales were up at New England ski areas in 2008 and resorts expect the same in 2009/10. The thought being more people are putting off the ski trip out west and staying closer to home. Skiing locally saves on the travel costs (obviously) and people are able to take more smaller trips instead one one long costly vacation. Read the rest of this entry »
New England Fall Foliage
September 23rd, 2009
It’s nearly autumn in New England. Soon the leaves will be exploding with color in shades of red, orange and yellow. Some color may begin to appear in isolated spots in far northern new england the first week in September. The color change typically begins at higher elevations and in the northern part of the region mid-September and moves southward through mid-to-late-October. It usually ends in southern New England coastal areas by the end of October. Visitors and vacationers traveling to see the foliage are known as “leaf peepers.” Although the term “peak color” is a bit of a myth, every person has their own idea of what peak color looks like. Typically the fullest color can be found from late-September in the north through mid-October in the south. Read the rest of this entry »
